Above the surface of the Drava River, on a terrace carved by the river over millions of years, stands the town of Ormož – a chessboard of townhouses, with a castle and a church nearby, boldly positioned like a king and queen commanding the game from a gentle hill. The area was already settled around 2100 BCE. Important trade routes crossed here, as the river crossing was the easiest and the path in all directions lay wide open.
Such a location wove for Ormož a rich and sometimes turbulent history, witnessed by archaeological finds and written records preserved by various institutions – most notably by the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum.
To fully experience the town, one must visit the Church of St. James, stroll through the town’s streets, and soak in the peace and tranquility of the castle park, where rare tree species still grow.
And on a hot summer day, you might be tempted to cool off at the town swimming pool, located at the edge of the castle park.
