Studenice Monastery and the Ruins of the Old Castle
Nestled between the mighty Boč mountain range and the mysterious Dravinja River, Studenice is widely known for the tranquility that visitors can feel at almost every step.
What attracts visitors is not only the peace of the village with its protected historic core, but also the partly preserved majestic nunnery, the ruins of the old castle, and the surrounding nature.

The golden era of Studenice, which still shines today, began around 1230, when Zofija of Rogaška established a travelers’ hospice with a church at the spring of grace, known as the hospital. After 1237, this influential noblewoman founded at the site of the hospital the Marija Monastery, which she also led as prioress. Before the mid-15th century, the monastery was fortified with walls and additional outbuildings, which today adorn the village core.
The interior of the Church of the St. Trije Kralji is particularly rich and highly valued, as it still houses functioning organs dated 1731, the famous nuns’ choir, and an altar with the relics of St. Fidelis, martyr.
The preserved remains of the monastery with the Church of the St. Trije Kralji are today considered one of the most recognizable cultural-historical monuments of northeastern Slovenia.
A rich collection of Studenice’s cultural heritage is gathered and displayed in the premises of the former old school in Studenice, which is maintained and managed by the Tourist Association Monastery Studenice.
