MARO – MAšina ROdbina – represents the winemaking tradition of a strong winegrowing family dating back to the 17th century.

It embodies the synergy of respect for the tradition of past generations, knowledge, natural grape processing, and the preservation of the natural harmony of taste and aroma.

History

The winemaking tradition of the Mursa family, according to written sources, dates back to the early 17th century, when the viticultural and winemaking work of Valentin Mursa is recorded in the ‘Viticultural Register of the Knights Hospitaller Commandery of Velika Nedelja’ from 1613.

The Mursa family tree throughout the centuries highlights the creative achievements of individuals who, in various ways, contributed to the development of society, its economic, political, and cultural life. A special place belongs to Josip Mursa, active in the 19th century, who left a lasting mark on his era as an outstanding entrepreneur. In the first half of the 20th century, he bottled his wines and sparkling wines under his own label and exported them to Hungary and Austria.

Maša Samec, a descendant of the Mursa family, continues the winemaking tradition with respect for the natural conditions of the excellent vineyard sites, by preserving the original characteristics of the grape varieties, and by carefully nurturing the wine throughout the maturation process in the cellar.

VINEYARDS and TERROIR

In the eastern, sunlit part of Slovenia, in the Styrian Slovenia wine-growing region, more precisely in the Ljutomer-Ormož Hills, lie the MARO vineyards, inherited by Maša from her grandfather, architect Dušan Samec, grandson of Josip MURSA.

The vineyard of Yellow Muscat, Sauvignon, and the local variety Šipon spreads across the ideally west-facing, moderately steep slope of Nunska Graba. The steep southeast-facing slope of Strezetina, at an altitude of 300 meters, provides perfect conditions for growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc.

Hand harvesting ensures the highest quality foundation for producing excellent wine.

MURSA Wines of the MARO Winery

The MARO Winery offers a selection of red, rosé, and white wines with varying levels of sweetness: dry, semi-dry, and semi-sweet. The wines are aromatic, expressed in a wealth of fruity, floral, and herbal aromas. On the palate, they are lively due to refreshing acidity, elegantly full-bodied, and rich in extract.

The label design of the MURSA brand wines features an abstracted original motif from a mosaic tile created in the product line of Josip MURSA in 1895.
