The influence of the Pohorje Mountains is most pronounced in this subdistrict, which is why the wines have excellent aromatic potential even in increasingly hot vintages. The vineyards are situated at elevations that can reach up to 500 meters above sea level.

Maribor is the capital of Styria with a rich wine history. The first records of vine cultivation date back to the 10th century. The Meranovo estate is considered the cradle of modern Styrian viticulture. It was on these famous sites that Archduke John planted some of the leading grape varieties today in 1822. Maribor boasts a long tradition of professional education and remains its center. It is also home to the oldest vine in the world, which is more than 450 years old.
