Sub-region Ljutomer-Ormož
JERUZALEM, TERRACED VINEYARDS AND ŠIPON
This is one of the central subdistricts of Štajerska Slovenia and also the largest. It is located in the eastern part of the region. To the east, it borders Croatia, to the south the Drava Valley, to the north the Mura Valley, and to the west the Central Slovenske Gorice subdistrict. Ljutomer and Ormož are important traditional wine centers. In the late 1960s, large and modern wine cellars were built in both cities.

The vineyards are planted on picturesque hills that rise between 250 and 341 meters above sea level (Jeruzalem). They grow on steep slopes, ensuring excellent sun exposure for the vines. The proximity to the Pannonian Plain results in higher temperatures—this is the warmest and driest part of Styria. The soils are light, sandy loam, marl, and well-draining.
The region is recognizable for its picturesque terraces around the village of Jeruzalem and its high concentration of excellent vineyard sites, which allow for the production of rich wines. A specialty is Šipon, one of the oldest grape varieties, which thrives exceptionally well in this environment.
