Sub-region Haloze
VINEYARDS ON THE STEEPEST SLOPES
The wine-growing sub-district of Haloze borders the Drava River valley to the north, the Croatian Varaždin wine-growing area to the southeast, and to the west, it is bordered by the Maribor wine-growing sub-district.

The vineyards in this area are situated on the steepest slopes in Slovenia. Picturesque, highly varied short ridges run in different directions, and the vineyard sites are excellently sun-exposed. The soil is predominantly marl or limestone, with a relatively shallow layer of humus. Vineyards are located between 200 and 400 meters above sea level.
Haloze, located on the right bank of the Drava River, have always been closely connected to Ptuj, which boasts a rich wine tradition documented as far back as Roman times. At the turn of the 20th century, Ptuj was an important wine trade center, home to numerous influential wine merchants. The area has long been renowned for its excellent varietal wines, well-suited to the steep slopes and light marl soils.
