Church of St. Bolfenk and Parish House

Construction of the Church of St. Bolfenk and the rectory began in 1786.

They were built using materials from the Urbanska Cemetery Chapel of St. Bolfenk and the Chapel of St. Janez on Gaberniški Vrh near Sv. Lovrenc in Slovenske gorice. Construction lasted a little over two years, and on January 1, 1790, the first Holy Mass was celebrated in the new church. Originally, the church did not have its present appearance. The bell tower was lower — it was heightened in 1885. The church initially had a flat wooden ceiling, which was replaced with a vaulted one in 1880.

The main altar was installed upon completion of the church in 1790. It featured a stone mensa, and above it hung a painting of St. Wolfgang, brought from the former cemetery chapel. The current gilded structure with a tabernacle was added in 1880. In 1884, a painting of St. Bolfenk (by artist J. Brollo) was placed above the altar. It was replaced in 1903 by a statue of St. Wolfgang, made by the sculptor Perko from Sv. Trojica in Slovenske gorice.

The side altars on the men’s and women’s sides were also erected when the church was completed, though not in their current form. It is believed that they too were brought from the Urbanska Cemetery Chapel along with the building materials. The side altar of the Holy Family was remodeled in 1895 and is dedicated to the Holy Family. The figures were carved by Perko. On the sides are statues of St. Frančišek Ksaverski and St. Janez Nepomuk, and above is St. Martin on horseback. The side altar on the women’s side has a masonry mensa and wooden superstructure, dedicated to St. Lucija. In front stands a statue of the Žalostne Matere Božje with the dead Jezus, flanked by St. A and St. Barbara, and above them a figure of the Devica Marija with Child. The statues are very old, though their creator is unknown.

The pulpit, located on the men’s side at the start of the presbytery, is wooden and mounted on the wall. Its origin is unknown. It is decorated with images of the four Evangelists, and above it stands a statue of Moses holding the Tablets of the Ten Commandments.

The organ, built by Adelberd Kafka (active in Maribor between 1850–1870), was installed in 1868 and has 14 registers.

The Stations of the Cross are of unknown origin and date.

The paintings behind the main altar were made in 1880 by Fontoni from Konjice, while the rest of the presbytery paintings were done in 1884 by J. Brollo from Gemona. The nave was later painted in 1895 by Gornik from St. Peter’s in Maribor. The current layout of the presbytery was designed by architect France Kvaternik, with the installation of a new altar, ambo, baptismal font, sedilia, offertory table, and tabernacle pedestal completed in 1988.

The bell tower was, at times, without bells. It is not known when the first bells were installed. Two of them were probably transferred from the Chapel of St. Bolfenk. In 1885, new bells were cast using the metal from the previous ones, creating four new bells. However, World War I claimed them. In 1923, new bells were obtained; due to a lack of funds for bronze, they were made of steel.
