SVETA TROJICA V SLOVENSKIH GORICAH MUNICIPALITY
Osek Quarry
In the forest along the road north of the Polič homestead in Osek lies an abandoned underground quarry. It is a deposit of yellow-brown rocks, limestone, and sandstone. An unexploited limestone layer, about 20 centimeters thick, contains numerous well-preserved fossil shells of snails and mussels. The entrance to the underground quarry is becoming overgrown, but the cave tunnels, several hundred meters long, remain stable. It is considered one of the few quarries in Slovenia where stone was extracted underground. The stone was used as building material, for example, for the churches in Benedikt and St. Trije Kralji, for Negova Castle, and partly also for the church at Ptujska Gora.
