Burial Mounds
The burial mounds in the Slovenske gorice hills are characterized by the presence of only one or at most two urn burials. In the area of Sveta Ana, seven sites with 45 burial mounds have been preserved. Most of them belong to Roman-period mounds, dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. All the mounds show traces of disturbance, as in the 19th century they were heavily exposed to “treasure hunters” who sold the excavated objects to antique collectors. Today, they are protected and declared archaeological monuments, as they hold special value for the study of the past. An educational trail also passes by the mounds, where one Roman burial mound measures 12 m in diameter and 1.9 m in height. The mound is circular in shape. Traces of excavation are visible in three places, and on the western side it has been damaged by a forest path. A legend is also associated with this mound: the older inhabitants of Sveta Ana, who knew about it, were convinced that a golden carriage was buried inside.
