Parish Church of St. Marjeta Antiohijska

The parish has two churches: the Parish Church of St. Marjeta Antiohijska, which points to its great age, and the Succursal Church of St. Janez Krstnik on Janževa Gora. Misfortune struck them both. The parish church burned to the ground in 1773 and was rebuilt by 1780. At the same time, the rectory also burned down, together with all documents and parish registers.

The original church was probably Romanesque and smaller than the present one. In the Gothic style, a five-eighths presbytery and bell tower were built and the church enlarged, as can be seen from the architecture of the building. The tower was later raised in the Baroque style, as was the church, to which two chapels were added: the Chapel of St. Barbara in 1730 and the Chapel of Marija in 1760.

The interior has a unified Baroque appearance. In addition to the main altar, there are three side altars, dedicated to St. Marija (Marija Chapel), St. Barbara (Barbara’s Chapel), and St. Janez Nepomuk. The main altar, Marija’s altar, the altar of St. Janez Nepomuk, and the pulpit are the work of Jožef Straub. The altar in Barbara’s Chapel is probably the work of the sculptor Mihael Pogačnik. The organ was built by Josip Salb in 1847. The frescoes were painted by Jakob Brollo in 1888, and the Stations of the Cross by the same painter in 1890.

Between 1980 and 1990 the church underwent gradual renovations. The roof and belfry were renewed, horizontal and floor insulation of the walls and floors was carried out, a new floor was laid, and a new altar table and ambo were designed according to the plans of the Ljubljana architect Jože Kregar, who passed away in 1991. A new façade and the church park were also completed.
