Fundamental Benchmark

Along the Ruše–Fala railway line, at kilometer marker 15.3, a fundamental benchmark with a Latin inscription is set into a stable gneiss wall. Of all the benchmarks in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, only this one has been preserved on Slovenian territory. The benchmark was built during the Austro-Hungarian period to determine the altitude of individual height points (benchmarks). Even today, it serves to establish precise elevation data and to monitor ground movements over long periods of time (more than 100 years).
