Šturmovci Landscape Park

In the triangle formed by the old riverbed of the Drava, the Dravinja River with the edge of the Haloze Hills, and the Videm Ridge beneath the embankment of the Ptuj Reservoir lies a 125-hectare remnant of riverine landscape, which has been protected as the Šturmovci Landscape Park since 1979. It is bordered on the northwest by the Ptuj Reservoir, on the south by the slopes of the Haloze Hills, and on the east by the confluence of the Drava and Dravinja rivers. This is a wide floodplain area that serves as an effective retention basin for high waters. The area is characterised by a remarkable diversity of habitats — from gravel banks, shallows, oxbow lakes, and streams to mown and unmown floodplain forests and meadows. The most significant natural feature of the Šturmovci Landscape Park is the river meadow (loka) — a remnant of once vast floodplain meadows along the Drava River between Maribor and Ormož. The river meadow is a broad floodplain area along the river. In its lowest parts grow white willows, which can be flooded for most of the year. On higher and drier ground, willows disappear and are replaced by poplars, ashes, elms, oaks, and other species that can tolerate being submerged for up to three months a year. The rhythm of life in the meadow is shaped by floods — the water carries away and reshapes gravel beds, sandbanks, and soil along with the trees.
