Ancient Roman burialmounds
The Ancient Roman burialmounds are located in the forest southeast of Miklavž. The tumulus cemetery represents an important remnant from Roman times. Most of the mounds are leveled, with only three still distinct. In one of them is a stone tomb containing a very rich inventory.
The mounds were first excavated in 1961. Research resumed in 2002, when the burial mound cemetery was uncovered and the tomb reconstructed in such a way that it can now be visited. In front of the mound, a base for a monument that once stood before it was also discovered.
When the tomb was opened, two amphorae were found, along with a small bowl of finely refined clay, seventeen glass vessels, iron clasps, a bronze sheet make-up box, a belt set, a bronze clasp, and a bronze coin bearing the image of the Roman emperor Vespasian (9–79; ruled 69–79). The original finds are today part of the permanent exhibition of the Regional Museum Maribor.
In the immediate vicinity of the Roman mound and the Miklavž church, one can rest and regain strength in the unspoiled nature by the Miklavž ponds.
