Maribor Municipality
Main Square
On the Main Square, the central square of Maribor, you can admire several landmarks of the old town, enjoy a coffee at one of the cafés while basking in the sun, or visit one of the small shops. In 2020, the square and Koroška Street were renovated, and traffic was removed.
The square is defined by significant historical buildings that surround it. The Town Hall, built at the beginning of the 16th century, serves today for mayoral receptions and wedding ceremonies. In the middle of the square stands the Marian or Plague Column, erected by the townspeople in the 17th century in memory of the plague that claimed the lives of almost a fifth of the population in 1680 and 1681. Among the more interesting buildings on the square is the former casino, now home to the creative Salon of Applied Arts. On the site of the former Koper Inn once stood Maribor’s first brewery, while the corner building at the beginning of Poštna Street, bearing the inscription “Ludwigshof,” was once owned by the Franz milling family, who operated a large mill in Melje. Another notable building, decorated with pharmaceutical motifs, once housed the city pharmacy of the well-known Maribor pharmacist Franc Minarik.
