Old Market House on Ptujska Gora

The Old Market House stands on the southern slope of Ptujska Gora. It is a ground-floor building, partly with a cellar, covered with a steep gabled roof. The entrance to the house is through a rectangular portal with the year 1926 carved in the keystone. At that time, the house was completely renovated, but the building itself is older, dating back to 1850.

The house was once intended for living, but with its renovation it received a new public purpose. It is owned by the Municipality of Majšperk and was restored in 2012 under the supervision of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. In May 2013 it was handed over to the management of the Tourist Association of Ptujska Gora.

The house has been restored in the style of 19th-century market houses and today houses a museum of old objects and furniture from a hundred or more years ago. It thus represents a museum of the ethnological heritage of the countryside and the way of life of the inhabitants of that time. A traditional black kitchen with an open fireplace and bread oven is also arranged. On special occasions, the house fills with the aroma of freshly baked bread, haloška gibanica, or ocvirkovka. Also presented are vessels once used for cooking or baking in the bread oven (dukl….), as well as tools used for various tasks (millstones, corn sheller, etc.).

The surroundings of the house are decorated with a herb garden, above which grows a descendant of the Old Vine from the Lent district in Maribor, of the variety žametovka or modra kavčina.

At the end of the herb garden there is also a wine press about 150 years old, which was still used for its purpose as recently as 30 years ago.
