Ormož Castle

The Ormož Castle stands on the southeastern part of a Bronze Age settlement, which was protected by an earthen rampart and a defensive moat. The moat runs along the entire eastern side of the castle complex and, at the end of the bailey, turns toward the former Hungarian city gate. In the last third of the 13th century, the Lords of Ptuj began building the castle complex.
Today, Ormož Castle hosts several exhibitions: Tapestries by Marij Pregelj, the Castle Cinema, From the Legacy of Dr. Otmar Majerič, Ormož in the Time of Karađorđević and Tito’s Yugoslavia, the Marko Sluga Collection, and the archaeological exhibition Between the Drava and the Mura.
The castle is surrounded by a park that ranks among the most beautiful landscaped gardens in the country. It features a great variety of tree species, including majestic oaks and ashes, as well as some exotic species. Along the path past the tulip tree, which leads toward the tomb of the castle’s last owners, visitors can admire large ashes, poplars, mighty oaks, and the remains of a linden tree avenue.
