Onion Festival in Dornava
Traditionally, the festival takes place on the second-to-last Sunday in August. Preparations last throughout the year, as members of the local society grow their own onions and grain straw in their fields. In the week before the festival, a press conference is organized at the Čüšek Homestead, where media representatives are invited and introduced to the program of that year’s event. At the same time, preparations begin for weaving onions into long braids, just as their ancestors once did. In the past, the fertile fields of Dornava were home to many onion growers. Today, members of the society work with dedication to continue and preserve this proud tradition.

At every Onion Festival, organizers strive to present a special feature from their rich ethnographic heritage. The event includes an ethnographic and culinary exhibition, focusing on dishes and objects connected with the onion. In the festival area near the hall, visitors can usually watch ethnographic demonstrations of traditional tasks related to onion growing and marketing. The culinary offer is especially rich, led by the traditional Onion Meal – homemade bread, pork spread, preserved meat, and onion. Other delicacies include layered pastry, rolled walnut cake, onion with eggs or beans, and many other specialties. Visitors can also stock up on onions for the winter pantry at the event.
