Church of St. Elizabeta

The Church of St. Elizabeta stands in the village of Pohorje on the Slovenian–Croatian border and is dedicated to St. Elizabeta of Thuringia. It was probably built during a plague outbreak that had already spread through this area in 1664. The church received its roof in 1673, as indicated by the year carved on a beam of the oak roof structure; this date has also become established in professional literature as the time of its construction.

The altar furnishings date from around 1680. The church once also had small “katarinka” organs, which were replaced in 1920 with a Brandl harmonium. In 1916, all three bells were taken from the church, and after the end of World War I they were replaced with two new ones. Both bells were requisitioned by the Germans in 1943, and a bell from the Church of St. Katarina was then hung in the belfry, allegedly so that members of the volunteer fire brigade could warn of a possible fire.

In 1990, the church façade was renovated and an entrance porch was added; in 2000, the interior was restored and the roof covering was replaced.
