Vuk Homestead

Vuk Homestead stands by the road in Dobrina, a dispersed settlement before Žetale, in the southwestern part of the Haloze region.

The wooden, “cimprana” house is built from roughly hewn logs, plastered with clay, and whitewashed with lime. The lower, cellar part is made of stone. The steep, hipped roof is thatched with straw. A wooden balcony (gank) surrounds the building. The windows are small and almost square. Beneath the balcony stands a wooden wine press. The earliest preserved records of the owners of Vuk’s Homestead date back to 1861. The house had once been in extremely poor and dilapidated condition.

In 2006, the municipality managed to settle the ownership status and begin restoration work. The thatched roof was restored first. In 2007, further works followed — repairing the wooden and stone walls, restoring the clay and lime plasters, the balcony, and the building’s fittings, as well as arranging the interior. After removing the plaster from the wooden walls, the original, almost square windows were reconstructed. During the restoration of the stone cellar walls, two cellar openings were discovered and presented. The original hearth was restored, and the bread oven was reconstructed. The reconstruction of the bread oven was made possible based on the fragments of old stove tiles that were found on site.
