Theatres and opera
Styria is rich in theatres that offer a wide range of cultural experiences and artistic performances. The most important among them are the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor and the Ptuj City Theatre.
Slovene National Theatre Maribor is the central cultural institution in Styria and one of the most important theatres in Slovenia. It boasts a rich tradition of opera, ballet, and drama performances. The internationally acclaimed ballet ensemble, led by Edward Clug, captivates audiences worldwide. Every June, it hosts the Borštnik Theatre Festival, where prestigious awards for theatrical achievements are presented. The opera soloists and the symphony orchestra of the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor also enchant audiences with large-scale productions such as Ballet Under the Stars and Opera Night in the City Park, which have become true cultural landmarks of both Maribor and Ptuj.

The Ptuj City Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Slovenia, has been active since the 18th century. Although smaller in size, it boasts a rich repertoire and high-quality performances for audiences of all ages.

The Maribor Puppet Theatre holds a special place among Styrian theatres, housed in the former Minorite monastery. Its performances are primarily intended for children, yet the magic of the puppet world often enchants adult audiences as well. The puppets come to life through innovative and imaginative productions that combine traditional puppetry techniques with modern theatrical approaches.

The Narodni Dom Maribor is more than just a cultural institution. It is the heart of the community, bringing people together through art and culture. With its programs and events, it promotes cultural engagement, education, and social connection. Narodni Dom is also the organizer or venue of major festivals, such as the Lent Festival, Jazz Lent, and other cultural festivals that attract visitors from all over Slovenia and abroad.
