Brumen Cellar Museum
The locals are proud of the restored “Cimprača” and the Brumen Cellar Museum. The latter is at least 255 years old, as evidenced by the year 1757 carved above its entrance. The Cimprača is a traditional building constructed from wooden logs, with a roof joined by wooden pegs and thatched with straw. The small windows feature iron crosses, and the floors are made of compacted clay, old bricks, and wooden planks. The Brumen family has owned the Cimprača for three generations, and experts have listed it among the seventeen most successfully restored heritage buildings in Slovenia.
This cultural monument has preserved its original and authentic form. The walls, made of wooden beams, are coated on both sides with clay mixed with straw. The roof is fully connected with wooden joints and covered with hand-prepared thatch. The small windows, with forged iron crosses, and the traditional flooring made of clay, brick, and wood, reflect the building’s heritage craftsmanship.
The Cimprača has remained in the Brumen family for three generations, and at least one more is committed to caring for it. Each generation has ensured its preservation by maintaining the roof, mastering the traditional skills of thatching and clay plastering, passed down from their ancestors.
In 2011, the house underwent a complete restoration under the supervision of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Maribor. The renovation included both interior and exterior clay plastering with a lime finish, renewal of wooden floors, and protection of all wooden elements with natural materials. The entire roof was re-thatched.
Inside the Cimprača, visitors can see objects preserved on the Brumen farm, passed down through generations. The exhibition offers insight into the daily life and work of their ancestors.
The cellar was also fully restored in 2011. Its floor is paved with old bricks, and it houses traditional wine vessels and equipment once used by the Brumen family’s forebears for winemaking.
