Šega Mine

At the junction of Miocene and Permian rocks, coal deposits were formed many millions of years ago. This coal, almost 30 million years old, was in the past mined at several locations in the area of today’s Municipality of Poljčane. Among them, the best preserved today is the Šega Mine, located just before the Belojača Cave, which bears the longest history of coal mining in the Dravinja Valley. The brown coal mine, with the exceptional calorific value of black coal, is said to have been exploited as early as Napoleonic times, continuing up until 1960.

Today, the entrance to the mine is marked and arranged so that through the protective gate it is possible to view several meters of the entrance tunnel.
