National Liberation Museum Maribor
Rich museum collections
We invite you to the Museum of National Liberation Maribor, where you can explore the rich 20th-century history of north-eastern Slovenia. The museum is housed in the famous Scherbaum Villa next to the beautiful Maribor City Park.
What can you see?
The permanent exhibition on Maribor in the 20th century takes visitors through industrial Maribor, the period of struggles for the northern border, introduces General Rudolf Maister, highlights the flourishing of Slovenian Maribor between World War I and World War II, and evokes the fate of Maribor’s residents during World War II.
A separate permanent exhibition presents events in the city of Maribor during World War II. In six exhibition rooms you will learn about:
the Nazi occupation,
the occupier’s Germanisation measures targeting the Slovene population,
the organisation of resistance and the activities of resistance groups and partisan units in this part of Slovenia from 1941 until the end of the war.
For a more in-depth visit, we recommend a guided tour of the exhibitions and collections.
From military headquarters to museum
The neo-Renaissance villa that now houses the museum was commissioned in the 1890s by the Maribor entrepreneur Scherbaum. During World War I it served for a time as the Austro-Hungarian headquarters of the Isonzo Front. In the 1920s it was used by the Maribor municipal authorities, after 1930 by a forestry school, after World War II by the Maribor OZNA, and later by the city’s political organisations. Since 1954, it has been home to the museum.
