Pruh Quarry
The Pruh Quarry was formed during the Miocene period, between 23 and 5.3 million years ago. The present-day Lithothamnian limestone represents reef or near-reef formations of the ancient sea. In 1986, it was decided that the replica of the Plague Monument in Maribor would be made from stone quarried here. The replica now stands on the Main Square in Maribor.
Until 1991, the Yugoslav People’s Army guarded the state border in this area. A 100-meter zone was established, into which residents were not allowed to enter. Today, the Pruh Quarry is a peaceful and pleasant spot on a sunny hillside, surrounded by vineyards, and worth a visit in its own right.
