Wine cellar Viničarija

The Wine cellar Viničarija in the Municipality of Destrnik is a carefully preserved traditional winegrower’s house of the Slovenske gorice hills. In the past, such “cimprana” (timbered) houses were home to viničarji—workers who cultivated vineyards for estate owners and lived “up on the hill” among the vines. With its characteristic cellar, wooden porch (gank), and modest living quarters, the house vividly illustrates former work and everyday life: from pruning, hoeing, and spraying to harvest time, kitchen tasks, and the use of simple tools.

Today, the Wine cellar Viničarija serves as a small museum and experiential space. Visitors can view an exhibition of objects, learn the stories of the viničarji, and—by prior arrangement—taste local wines and specialties of the area’s cuisine. Nearby stands a flax-drying shed (lanišnica), which brings to life the heritage of flax processing. The Viničarija is therefore not merely an architectural curiosity but a “living witness to the past” that links the heritage of wine, flax, and rural everyday life with Destrnik’s contemporary tourist offer and helps preserve the community’s identity.
